What is the greatest gift someone could give you?
For me, the greatest gifts have always been simple yet meaningful. I have always loved chocolates, especially from my two favorite companies, Patchi and Godiva.
If not chocolates, then diamonds hold a special place in my heart. And if not diamonds, Sephora has always been a favorite, with makeup, skincare, and perfumes all in one place.
As I think about this now, I realize that only my father ever gave me all of this and more. I would simply point to what I liked, and he would make it happen. From my diamond phase to being introduced to Sephora, everything traces back to my beloved Aba. He had his own way of making me feel cherished, always treating me like his princess.
I was introduced to Patchi around 2002 or 2003, and it has remained my favorite chocolatier ever since. Godiva holds its own special memories too. I have always loved their bark chocolates rather than the pre packed minis. Visiting their store at Glendale Galleria was an experience in itself. The display of large, fresh slabs of chocolate, cut and served by weight, made it feel indulgent and special. Sadly, most of their stores have closed, and much of their business has moved online.
Diamonds, of course, have always felt timeless to me. A delicate tennis bracelet, simple solitaire rings, and earrings feel like quiet staples. To me, they are not about excess but about femininity and elegance. They are part of what it feels like to be a girl.
After writing all of this, I realize how high my standards may seem. At the same time, I am deeply grateful to have experienced life at that level. Alhamdulillah. Despite all of this, I am very simple at heart. I no longer carry expectations from anyone, because the only person who would do these things for me is no longer here.
He gave me everything.
